Tolaga Bay resident breaks DJ record

9:21 pm on 8 July 2010

A Tolaga Bay disc jockey has broken the world record for the longest non-stop live broadcast, after spending 176 and a half hours on air.

Uawa FM's Nikora Curtis broke the previous record, set by the American Johnny Walker, by one and a half hours on Thursday afternoon.

A fellow DJ at Uawa FM, Lena Hussey, says Mr Curtis, who is 59, had to talk on air after every three songs in order to break the record. He was allowed just a 15-minute break every eight hours, which he used to shower or nap, before continuing his broadcast.

Mr Curtis, who started the record-breaking effort last Thursday, did it to raise money for the radio station.
