Helicopter rescue in Tararuas

10:57 pm on 11 July 2010

Two people have been flown out of the Tararua Ranges in the lower North Island by rescue helicopter on Sunday after texting friends that they feared for their safety.

The 27-year-old woman and 31-year-old man sent text messages saying that their GPS batteries had died and they were in deep snow.

They gave their last known position and said they were heading for Alpha Hut.

Rescuers on Wellington's Westpac Rescue Helicopter used night vision goggles to spot a torch carried by the pair, who were quickly located and picked up.

The pair was in good health and did not require medical attention.
