Permanent skid pad wanted for car enthusiasts

Car enthusiasts in Christchurch say a permanent skid pad could help solve the boy racer problem, after a chaotic weekend on city streets.

In two separate incidents, the police arrested 30 people after they blocked a motorway on-ramp, and a man died when a car fleeing a police patrol crashed.

Southern Car Culture chair Nadra Gosling says a purpose-built facility for legal burnouts would help get some of the trouble makers off the streets.

The club ran a public skid night at Ruapuna Speedway on Saturday that attracted more than 1000 spectators.

Ms Gosling says a year-round permanent facility would cost nearly $500,000 and the club will continue to raise money.
