Blaze evacuates iwi offices in Napier

10:18 pm on 12 July 2010

The Fire Service says it may take some time to determine what caused a blaze at iwi offices in Napier on Monday afternoon.

The fire started just before 2pm in a semi-detached building at the back of Te Taiwhenua O Te Whanganui A Orotu's complex, which is about 500m from the city centre.

Fire Service spokesperson Chris Nicol says seven appliances and 30 firefighters took just over an hour to put the fire out.

He says staff had evacuated the main building by the time firefighters arrived.

Mr Nicol says a kohanga reo in a small building next door was not occupied because of the school holidays.
