A 56-year-old woman has died in hospital after an accident at Canterbury's Mount Hutt Ski area.

The woman was skiing with her 18-year-old daughter on the southwest face, outside the ski area boundary, on Monday afternoon when she slipped and fell up to 700m over rocks.

She was airlifted to the skifield's medical room before being flown to Christchurch Hospital.

It is the second skiing fatality at Mount Hutt this season; a 21-year-old woman died from head injuries sustained in a fall last month.

A 60-year-old man also died last month when his car plunged off the ski area access road.
