A man whose vehicle was clocked at almost 70km over the speed limit, has had his restricted driver's licence suspended for 28 days.

Police in Waikato say they recorded the vehicle doing 169km per hour early on Monday morning on State Highway Three on the outskirts of Hamilton.

The driver, aged 19, told them he was in a hurry because he was late for work.

He was charged with operating a vehicle at a dangerous speed.
