A toddler has been taken into the care of Child Youth and Family after being found wandering alone in Hamilton.
She was discovered on River Road shortly before 7pm on Tuesday and mental health care providers helped find her mother.
Police say that if the public had not helped the child, officers could have been dealing with a tragedy.
