Local government leader defends scrutinised spending

11:33 am on 26 July 2010

Local Government New Zealand president Laurence Yule has defended the sector against accusations of carefree spending by leading figures.

His comments follow media coverage of credit card spending by mayors and executives in Auckland and elsewhere.

Opening Local Government New Zealand's annual conference in Auckland, Mr Yule said most personal spending is fair, reasonable and transparent.

Mr Yule told the hundreds of local body leaders to remain proud of what they do.
