Homicide inquiry launched into city flat death

Police in Wellington have launched a homicide investigation into the death of a woman whose body was discovered in a Newtown flat earlier this week.

They say preliminary post-mortem results suggest that Allison McPhee, 42, a transient who was known to police, died violently.

The head of the investigation, acting Detective Inspector Scott Miller, says neighbours heard an altercation in the flat on Sunday.

Police believe that Ms McPhee, who had been dead three to five days when found, was last seen on Thursday last week.

While urging anyone with information to come forward, they say they will continue talking to neighbours over the weekend.
