About a hundred local residents marched through a south Auckland suburb on Saturday protesting against the spread of liquor stores in their area.
The Clendon protesters were objecting in particular to the opening earlier in July of a liquor outlet in Finlayson Ave.
The liquor licence application was notified in-store and in a newspaper but the protesters say that was not enough.
One of them, Simeon Brown, says communities should be given a greater say in the liquor licensing process.
"The community by what it's done is really just showing that we are concerned and in future we would like to be consulted," Mr Brown says.
He says he hopes the district liquor licensing authority will take the protest into account when deciding if it will renew the store's licence next year.
Daljit Singh, a spokesperson for store manager Tara Singh, says the manager feels he has been unfairly targeted as he hasn't done anything wrong.
The licence was correctly applied for and properly notified, Mr Singh says, while agreeing that there's a heavy concentration of liquor stores in the area.
