Unusual rise in twin births in Queenstown

9:04 am on 4 August 2010

In Queenstown, there's an unusual growth industry - twins.

A couple of sets of twins are born each year in Queenstown, but this year, 10 sets have either already arrived, or are expected.

Stretched childcare centres say they will struggle to cope.

The number of preschool centres has increased to four - with another one on the way - in recent times, but they still have triple-figure waiting lists.

Queenstown Preschool Nursery already has 112 children on its waiting list.

But the problem's not expected to flow on to primary schools. There are two.

Queenstown Primary School principal John Western says there is space for 1100 pupils between the two schools and about 850 places are filled at present.
