Cameras to operate in Wellington bus lanes

9:59 am on 5 August 2010

Six cameras are to be set up along bus lanes in Wellington to catch motorists breaking the law.

Motorists can be fined $150 for driving more than 50 metres in a bus lane.

Cameras will also be used to catch cars using a new bus route through Manners Mall and the Pirie street bus tunnel, where a man was seriously injured in a hit and run incident last year.

The council's acting director of infrastructure, Maria Archer, says it

Wellington City Council expects to issue about 16 tickets per day when the exercise starts next month, but says little profit will be made.

Acting director of infrastructure Maria Archer says the six cameras cost $50,000 and operating costs could be up to $2000 per month.
