Police say they stopped a driver travelling at 200kmh on Auckland's northern motorway.

They say the 19-year-old, who is on a restricted licence, was detected early on Friday by a stationary patrol car.

His V12 BMW was stopped a short while later at Fanshawe Street near the inner-city.

The man has been charged with driving at a dangerous speed.

He faces a mandatory licence suspension for six months, a maximum penalty of three months in prison and a fine of up to $4,500.
