Weaving exhibition opens

6:03 am on 7 August 2010

An exhibition on weaving has opened in Auckland which pushes the limits of the tradition.

Waatea News reports Manawa Wera - Defiant Chants at Objectspace on Ponsonby road brings together the work of Ngahina Hohaia and Karl Rangikawhiti Leonard.

While her work comes out of learning whatu taniko and raranga traditions within her family, Miss Hohaia says it's developed into contemporary sculpture using metals, woollen blankets and other sculptural forms.

She says her work is grounded in the songs and traditions of Taranaki and Parihaka.
