Waipara River restrictions planned

3:01 pm on 7 August 2010

Hurunui District Council is considering putting restrictions on campers, hunters and motorists along parts of the Waipara River.

The proposals are part of a draft plan to manage and protect the river.

The council says growing numbers of campers and vehicles along the river are damaging the environment and leaving behind more waste.

Environmental services manager Andrew Feierabend says more private properties are also being developed in the area.

He says adding activities such as hunting to that mix is potentially dangerous.

Mr Feierabend says the council would confine such activities to areas away from campers or private properties.
