Iwi frustrated volcanic cones haven't been fixed

Auckland Maori are frustrated at what they say is a slow response to fixing the damage caused to several of the region's landmark volcanic cones.

Ngati Whatua O Orakei criticised the Auckland City Council for damaging fencing work carried out by contractors, saying it had carved into archeological sites that date back 400 years.

The council has apologised for the damage and has been talking with the iwi to decide on how best to fix the sites.

But a spokesperson for the iwi, Ngarimu Blair, says it has been more than five weeks since they agreed on a plan, and he is desperate for the council to get to work.

Mr Blair says the council is waiting to give itself a resource consent but in the meantime the area is getting more damaged from people walking on it and heavy rain.
