Police are searching for a man after the members of the armed offenders squad were called to an incident in Mamaku.
Police cordoned off the village, 20km north-west of Rotoura on Thurday, after the family of a 35-year-old man contacted police concerned for his emotional well-being.
Police believe the man has access to guns and has since left the area.
Acting Inspector Brent Crowe says police are keen to hear of any sightings of the man's vehicle - a charcoal-coloured, single-cab Toyota Hilux ute. The licence plate is UT5677.
