Cantabrians have until the end of Friday to make submissions on a planned bylaw that will make wearing life jackets in boats under six metres compulsory in the region.
Three other regional councils have introduced a similar bylaw.
All 60 submissions received so far support the move.
Maritime New Zealand says it hopes the Transport Act will be amended by October this year, after which other regional councils will have to introduce bylaws to reflect the change.
Regional councils are responsible for waterways within a 12 nautical mile radius, with Maritime New Zealand governing out to 200 nautical miles.
