Waikato council says drink driving limit changes urgent

Waikato Regional Council says it cannot accept the Government's decision to delay making changes to the drink driving limit for another two years.

The council's transport committee supported the immediate lowering of the blood alcohol limit for adults at its meeting this month.

In a letter to the Prime Minister this week, it urged the Cabinet to reconsider, saying alcohol is a factor in nearly a quarter of all fatal and serious crashes in the region.

The Government has delayed a decision on a proposal to lower the blood alcohol limit for adults to allow more research.
