A man who admitted importing more than 200 litres of the drug GBL, or Fantasy, into New Zealand has been jailed for five years and nine months.

Jarrod Balderston, 33, was sentenced in the Wellington District Court.

His drug operation brought 23 packages of the Class B controlled drug Fantasy into New Zealand between March 2008 and June last year.

The street value of the drugs was estimated at between $1.3 million and $2.7 million.

Judge Denys Barry said a pre-sentence report showed that until now Balderston had had an unblemished record.

He said Balderston had accepted responsibility for his offending and deserved credit for his early guilty plea.

Judge Barry said a letter written by Balderston expressed remorse for his offending and it was notable that he had declined an offer of bail after pleading guilty.
