Auckland's Birdcage pub to be moved

12:22 pm on 19 August 2010

A 125-year-old pub is being moved to make way for construction of the Victoria Park Tunnel in Auckland.

The Rob Roy Hotel - also known as the Birdcage - will be moved 40 metres on 31 August before being slid back into place next year.

The 1885 heritage-listed building will be on top of the southern end of the new motorway tunnel.

The hotel is owned by the Transport Agency and will be restored as part of a plaza when the tunnel is completed in 2012.

The project will increase the number of motorway lanes between Auckland's Harbour Bridge and Newmarket Viaduct.
