Auckland Zoo helps develop online database

Auckland Zoo has helped develop a new online database that helps facilities around the world share knowledge.

Some 800 zoos and aquariums have signed up to the Zoological Information Management System which has data on about 2.6 million animals.

Auckland Zoo's project manager Tineka Nielsen-Joustra says the database is of huge benefit to the zoological community.

She says if, for example, a facility is concerned about an animal's health they can look up how other zoos have dealt with the problem to see what works and what doesn't.
