Maori wanted as next Governor-General

7:31 pm on 20 August 2010

Maori Council member Maanu Paul is calling for the next Governor-General to be a Maori, when the term of Sir Anand Satyanand ends next year.

Mr Paul says major constitutional matters are in the wind, so an eminent Maori with experience in the law would be ideal for the role.

He says Sir Eddie Taihakurei Durie would have the support of Maori throughout the country.

Mr Paul told Waatea News it's been 20 years since Sir Paul Reeves held the post.
