Meeting with residents over potential slip

7:40 am on 20 August 2010

Whakatane District Council is to meet the evacuated residents of a slip-prone hillside on Friday.

At least 10 residents from Muriwai Drive have spent their second night with family or friends, because the slip behind their properties threatened to give way.

On Thursday, the council blocked a playground, public toilets, reserve, walkway and parking areas opposite the properties on Muriwai Drive.

Chief executive Diane Turner says she cannot say if and when they will be able to go home because engineering investigations are not yet complete.

Motorists are advised not to use Muriwai Drive unless they have to.
