An international promoter of indigenous tourism says the days of the hangi and concert combo are numbered.
Mexico-based Ron Mader uses online technology to highlight tourism products that encourage awareness of cultural and biological diversity.
He told Waatea News that rather than pitching products for busloads of tourists, Maori operators should target a growing number of international tourists who want to know more about how indigenous people live today.
Mr Mader said people want entertainment, but they also want "face to face", lasting experiences.
He says that Time Unlimited Tours, which is based in Auckland, is an example of a Maori operator creating exciting experiences for small groups of high value tourists.
