Second phase of child abuse inquiry starting

1:05 pm on 20 August 2010

The Independent Police Conduct Authority is beginning the second phase of an inquiry into the police handling of child abuse cases.

The inquiry began last year after it was discovered the police had made little or no progress on investigating more than 100 child abuse complaints in Wairarapa.

Initially the inquiry was to cover the Wellington police district, but it was later extended across the country.

The IPCA says the second phase of the inquiry will look at delays in investigating child abuse complaints in Wairarapa.

The fact no action was taken when the delays were realised by some police staff - and given some publicity - in 2006 will also be investigated.
