Appeal Court jails foster mum who killed baby

The Court of Appeal has sent a foster mother to prison for killing a 13-month-old she was caring for.

Sasha Pene, 30, was originally sentenced to home detention and community work for the manslaughter of her foster son Trent Matthews on 5 June 2009 in Rotorua.

The court says she hit the child hard on the head three or four times and angrily shook him because he was crying.

After an appeal by the Crown, the Court of Appeal has quashed the original sentence and substituted a sentence of two years and three months' imprisonment.

The court says while it recognises Pene's difficult family situation, the sentence imposed in the High Court was manifestly inadequate.

Pene must hand herself into police in Kaitaia by midday on Friday.
