Police have brought in fresh search and rescue volunteers from Wairoa to help in the search for missing Gisborne boy Lucas Ward.

The four-year-old vanished five days ago.

Teams scoured a stretch of both sides of the Waimata River on Saturday. Divers searched bends in the river, while Coastguard boats have also been out searching the sea.

Lucas was last seen in his grandmother's back yard in the northern Gisborne suburb of Kaiti on Tuesday afternoon.

His grandmother found his bike at the top of a path leading to a jetty and police say she saw a chippy packet floating in the river that was similar to one she had given him before he disappeared.

Police also want to talk to two male kayakers seen on the river at about 3pm on Tuesday, about the time Lucas disappeared.

The boy's aunt, Eleanor Ward, says the whole community has banded together in the search and it's important that no one gives up hope.
