Tasman cling on to upset Canterbury

10:01 pm on 21 August 2010

Tasman upset defending champions Canterbury 27-25 in Nelson on Saturday in round four of rugby's provincial championship.

It's Tasman's first win in five matches against Canterbury, who scored first through winger Telusa Veainu, only to concede three converted first-half tries.

Backs Tom Marshall and James Kamana and hooker Francis Smith scored for Tasman, giving the Makos a 24-10 lead at half-time.

They had an anxious final 15 minutes, after Canterbury came back with tries to halfback Andy Ellis and hooker Steve Fualau.

But the handling and passing errors that cost Canterbury in the first half returned and Tasman held on, to the jubilation of a near-capacity crowd at Trafalgar Park.

Wins for Wellington, Counties Manukau

In Wellington, the home side beat Waikato 26-14, scoring three tries to one. Wellington led 16-9 at half-time.

At Pukekohe, Counties Manukau beat Manawatu 35-14, scoring five tries to two for their third win of the championship.
