Submissions are being called over a proposed expansion of a ski area on to Department of Conservation land in Canterbury.

Porters Ski Area Ltd's plans include 407 hectares of skiable terrain, three chairlifts and a 3500 bed village in the $250 million development.

It has applied to the Selwyn District Council for a private plan change.

The Australian company, Blackfish, which owns the skifield, wants to trade 377 hectares of leasehold land for 200 hectares of DoC land.

The company says the expansion would generate 1000 jobs.
