The Ministry of Health says 10 people have died this year in connection with swine flu.

The latest death is that of a woman in her mid-50s in Taranaki last week.

Laboratory results show the woman tested positive for the H1N1 virus that causes swine flu and health officials say she had underlying medical conditions.

The ministry says as of midday on Monday 501 people have been hospitalised with laboratory-confirmed swine flu in New Zealand this year.

The figure includes 16 people currently in intensive care. Seventy-seven people have been admitted to intensive care in the year to date.

The ministry says swine flu is the most common strain of influenza in the community.
