Submissions sought over plans to extend ski area

Submissions are being called for over a proposed ski area expansion on Department of Conservation land in Canterbury.

Porters Ski Area Limited's plans include 407 hectares of skiable terrain, three chair lifts and 172 snow guns for making snow.

The $250 million development also includes a 3,500-bed village.

Australian company Blackfish, which owns the ski area, is proposing to trade 377 hectares of leasehold land for 200 hectares of DoC land into Crystal Valley.

A spokesperson for the company, Mike Sleigh, says it is not deterred by opposition from environmentalists to the development on DoC land.

Mr Sleigh says the expansion would generate 1000 jobs and it is frustrating that some people don't see it as a win-win situation.
