Off-duty policeman investigated over boy's accident

11:31 am on 25 August 2010

Nelson police say an off-duty officer whose vehicle hit a schoolboy has told investigators he was not using his cellphone at the time.

The 12-year-old suffered serious head injuries when he ran out in front of a school bus and collided with the side of the four-wheel-drive last week.

He's in a stable condition in Wellington hospital.

Inspector Brian McGurk says speed does not appear to be a factor in the accident and the officer has said he could not have been on his cellphone because he didn't have it with him.

Telephone records will be examined to confirm that.
