WWF urges Govt action on peak oil

Updated at 7:50 am on 27 August 2010

Environmental lobby group WWF says the public wants the Government to act now to avert the dwindling availability of oil in coming years.

WWF says the Government's own Draft Energy Strategy admits so-called Peak Oil is a genuine threat and that products like petrol will be scarce and expensive in future.

But the draft strategy rules out Government action on developing alternatives, leaving it to technology and the markets to deal with the problem.

WWF commissioned Colmar Brunton to find out whether the public thinks the Government should act, and says almost three quarters of those questioned said it should.

The poll targeted 500 people and has a margin of error of 4.4 percentage points.

The draft strategy is open to submissions from the public.
