Bay of Plenty council to act on urban flooding

6:06 am on 29 August 2010

Whakatane District Council says it is working to monitor and manage streams and catchments areas that are known to cause flooding in urban areas.

The area is recovering from recent flooding after a deluge of 300mm of rain.

The council says land use in upper catchments is affecting river and stream flows.

Works and services director Haydn Read says work will be prioritised according to the flood risk.

Mr Read says the council wants to minimise the height of peaks that come down waterways and create a long-term solution to minimise flood damage.
