Tough job identifying victim of caravan fire

5:07 pm on 29 August 2010

Police in Canterbury expect to have a tough time identifying the person who died in a caravan fire on Sunday morning.

A farmer discovered the fire at about 7am at Hanging Rock, between Temuka and Geraldine.

Emergency services later found the body inside the caravan, which was parked in a layby off a road near the Opihi River.

Inspector Dave Gaskin says the fire is being treated as suspicious and officers are endeavouring to identify the victim.

But he says their task is difficult because the fire was so intense. The caravan was completely burnt-out by the time they arrived.

Inspector Gaskin says a fire safety officer from Christchurch will reconstruct the scene to help with the investigation.
