More strikes ahead at hospitals in Auckland

10:31 am on 30 August 2010

District Health Boards in Auckland face more industrial action this week and next, as hospital radiographers and laboratory workers continue industrial action over pay.

Radiographers are to end a four-day strike at Counties Manukau DHB over pay on Monday. They will strike again for three days at Auckland DHB from Friday.

Counties Manukau DHB says it coped well, but had to defer 20 non-urgent orthopaedic procedures.

It will defer another 15 similar elective operations because of a nationwide strike by radiographers next Tuesday.

Auckland DHB has also deferred 500 operations because of a three-day stoppage by radiographers later this week, followed by the national strike.

Separate strikes

A separate group, lab workers, is also planning to escalate its rolling stoppages.

Lab personnel will walk off the job at all three Auckland boards on 10 September and in Canterbury from midday 13 September for 24 hours.

The Medical Laboratory Workers Union says it is a coincidence that its strike action has occured at the same time as radiographers.

Secretary treasurer Bryan Raill says there has been no attempt to combine the action.
