The Regional Sports Park Trust in Hawke's Bay has launched a bid to be the home of the only indoor cycling velodrome in the North Island.

Hawke's Bay has two of the four largest road cycling clubs in the country and the leading mountain bike club.

Sport Park Trust chairman Lawrence Yule, who is also Hastings district Mayor, says Hawke's Bay is New Zealand's cycling capital.

He says two months ago the Prime Minister announced funding for high performance sports facilities, including a velodrome.

Mr Yule says several regions have expressed an interest in having an indoor velodrome and a decison on where to build it will be made by SPARC early next year.

He says an indoor velodrome in Hawke's Bay costing $15 million would be part of a new regional sports park on the western outskirts of Hastings.
