Recently introduced domestic violence laws are being credited for a successful police operation in Hamilton that included the recovery of drugs, a clandestine lab and a firearm.

Police were called to a domestic incident at the WINZ office in Dinsdale on Friday.

No arrest was made, but a police safety order was issued to the man involved, meaning he was removed from the home.

Police say an illegal firearm was confiscated when officers took the woman involved home.

The officers also detected a strong chemical smell and discovered a cannabis growing operation and chemicals for manufacturing methamphetamine.

A man, 37, has been arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and explosives, cultivation of cannabis and possession of equipment used in the manufacture of methamphetamine.
