The two leading candidates for the new Auckland super city mayoralty are trying to attract Pacific Island voters by promising free entry to public swimming pools in South Auckland.
Manukau City already offers free entry to its six local pools. Manukau Mayor Len Brown, a main contender for the super city mayoralty, says it's a popular policy and could also work in the wider Auckland area.
Mr Brown says he also wants to get more Pacific Islanders into better jobs through education.
His super city mayoralty rival, Auckland City Mayor John Banks, says he also supports free entry because it has social benefits, but he says that would be a decision for local boards.
There are 21 pools within the super city boundary.
