Protest held against planned gaming machines in bar

7:58 pm on 1 September 2010

About 50 people have marched in protest against the planned installation of pokie machines in a bar in Victory, near Nelson.

The area has been named New Zealand community of the year.

Protesters say the Nelson City Council should not have changed its policy to allow the gaming machines within 100 metres of schools or other community facilities.

Nelson mayor Kerry Marshall says the whole process was well advertised and the council cannot revoke the new policy on gaming machines.
