Farm couple awarded compensation for legal battle

A Canterbury couple have won a legal battle against the company behind a multi-million-dollar irrigation scheme, and will get $46,000 compensation for the costs they incurred.

Brian Thompson and Helen Davey were about to subdivide their Darfield farm when the Central Plains irrigation company designated their land, saying it might be taken to make way for the irrigation scheme's dam.

That part of the scheme was later abandoned and the designation dropped, but by then the Darfield couple had spent thousands of dollars organising an Environment Court hearing of their request to make Central Plains buy the land outright.
