Companies push for more credits

2:49 pm on 3 September 2010

Big companies that use a lot of electricity say they are not getting enough compensation for high costs they face under the emissions trading scheme.

The companies get free emissions credits from the Government to let them compete with companies in countries without emissions trading.

But the companies' lobbyist, the Major Electricity Users' Group, says the level of their free credits was assessed on incorrect methodology from the Ministry for the Environment, an assertion it says is backed by a report it commissioned.

Environment Minister Nick Smith does not accept that he got bad advice, but he says the matter is complex and he is open to having it considered by a review of the scheme, set for next year.
