A 63-year-old man has died in a house fire in Wairoa, police say.
The home was destroyed in the blaze, which occurred about 1am on Friday morning.
Police say one of five people living in the house woke up to find a fire in the lounge.
He woke his partner and two children and took them out of the house, but was unable to rescue his partner's father because of the flames.
The man's body was found in a bedroom after firemen had put out the blaze.
Fire safety investigators were to look into the cause of the blaze.
