Weather cuts power as well

8:03 am on 6 September 2010

Bad weather overnight has cut power to about 1500 more houses in Canterbury.

About 3000 people were already without power because of the earthquake on Saturday morning, but more people are now affected because of fallen trees and cable faults.

Orion Energy says between 500 - 1000 houses in rural Canterbury have no power after high winds blew over large trees.

A further 500 houses in Avonside are affected after water got into damaged cables.

Orion says crews worked through the night to restore electricity to thousands of properties and are back out on Monday morning.

The company says all dairy sheds in Canterbury now have power - either through generators or mains supply.
