One of the country's biggest supermarket companies has noticed a surge in sales of Civil Defence kit essentials since the Canterbury earthquake.
Foodstuffs says the quake has prompted people both in Canterbury and throughout the country to take another look at how well prepared they are.
Executive manager Melissa Hodd says customers have been buying stocks of bottled water, batteries and gas cannisters.
She says it appears the Canterbury earthquake has been a wake-up call for people in all parts of the country.
Outdoor equipment chain store Kathmandu also reports an increase in sales of first aid kits, camp stoves and cooking equipment at a store in Wellington over the weekend.
