Everyday chat encouraged for Maori speakers

8:01 pm on 7 September 2010

Maori speakers in Helensville are being encouraged to engage in conversation with local high school students.

Kaipara College is issuing its reo Maori students with badges indicating their proficency level.

Maori studies head Carlin Shaw told Waatea News that it's part of making the language a part of normal life.

Mr Shaw says about 40 of Kaipara College's 200 students are learning te reo, but he hopes wider community acceptance will lead more to take it up.
