Rocky Horror Show creator Richard O'Brien has obtained residency in New Zealand.

O'Brien, 68, wanted to retire to New Zealand, but was told in June he did not fit the criteria for citizenship or permanent residency.

O'Brien came to New Zealand in 1952 as a 10-year-old when his family emigrated from Britain, and he spent 12 years in the country before moving to London.

He wants to move to the North Island coastal town of Katikati, where he owns property near where his family lives.
