Cameron appeal against rape, murder dismissed

The man who raped and murdered Christchurch teenager Marie Davis has had his appeal against his conviction and sentence dismissed.

Dean Cameron was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum non-parole period of 19 years for murder, and preventive detention for the rape of the 15-year-old in April 2008.

Cameron argued that the verdict is unreasonable, and there were errors in law in the trial and the judge's summing up.

However, the Court of Appeal says nothing occurred that gave rise to a miscarriage of justice.

Cameron also challenged being given preventive detention for rape but Court of Appeal ruled that was appropriate when his previous offending, conduct and prognosis are considered.
