King Country gunman now in custody

A gunman in the King Country is now in custody.

Te Rangi Trangmar, 24, was captured at a tavern at Te Anga, at about 3am on Wednesday. He surrendered without incident.

A light in the building had been seen at about midnight and a cordon was set up around the building.

A search for Mr Trangmar began on Sunday night. Police said that his behaviour was growing increasingly irrational and advised people not to approach him.

He is accused of attacking a neighbour in Otorohanga on Sunday and threatening a young woman with a gun on Monday night, before attempting to rob a hotel in Waitomo.

Premises previously searched

Police had previously searched the bar. Inspector Paul Carpenter says it was one of several addresses which had been visited, but Mr Trangmar was not there then.

He says it's likely Mr Trangmar will appear before the Hamilton District Court on Wednesday.
